Return of the Twinkie

url Good news! America’s favorite cream-filled sponge cakes have returned. Whether you noticed they were gone or not, Twinkies have been re-introduced with some improvements. The iconic sweet treat took an eight-month hiatus, and made a comeback last year, advertising that the shelf life had been doubled. Twinkie die-hards were thrilled with the “new and improved” product, while others remained unenthused. The myth used to be that Twinkies could last for years. Some believed that they may even still be here after the world ends. The less exciting reality was that they could last about 26 days, which is still quite a while for processed food. Since their return, Twinkies are now advertised as lasting a whopping 45 days. Along with some slight tweaks to the recipe, the longer shelf life can be attributed to a new design in packaging. The simple wrapping now creates better moisture control, keeping the spongy cakes from drying out. This change was able to create a whole new image for the brand, and it just goes to show that longer lasting food is strongly desired by consumers.
