Recycle vs. Biodegrade vs. Compost

The level of eco-friendliness of plastic film varies depending on its chemical make-up. Film substrates range from recyclable to biodegradable to compostable. Here is more information on what each of these categories means:

  1. "Plastic recycling" is the process of recovering scrap or waste plastic and reprocessing the material into useful products.

  2. "Biodegradable" broadly means that an object can be biologically broken down. Under proper conditions, some biodegradable plastics can degrade to the point where microorganisms can completely metabolize them to carbon dioxide (and water). For example, starch-based bioplastics produced from sustainable farming methods could be almost carbon neutral.

Please note that without the presence of moisture and water, biodegration cannot occur.

  3. "Compostable" makes the specific demand that the object break down under composting conditions.

Compost is organic matter that has been decomposed and recycled as a fertilizer and soil amendment. Compost is a key ingredient in organic farming.
